having mouse problems in windows XP

Sometimes windows seems to be recognizing a single click as though it was a
double click instead.

Device is a MS Intellimouse Optical USB with 4 buttons and a scroll wheel.

Tried all different values of double click speed in mouse settings, didnt help.

Confirmed to happen in several apps.

Any ideas what could be wrong?
Could it be hardware failure (i.e. "your mouse is stuffed")?

Are you using the Intellipoint enhanced drivers or the standard XP drivers.
I know that the enhanced Intellipoint drivers (version 4 and 5) have a
setting which you can tell the mouse button what to do.
