Hi i just reformat my other computer with window xp cd. i lost the original
one for so i had to borrow my friend's cd. Im not sure if it matter if u use
the original one that came with it or not. After i reformat, my computer
cannot connect to the internet. I call my internet sponsor and they told me
it's the computer fault since it's missing a program that communicate to the
internet. Basically at the bottom of the screen where the time located there
are no icons or anything. Even my volume icon is not there and i cant hear
any sound. Im not sure if i reformat correctly. How can u tell if u
reformatted right. Also what do u need to connect to the internet. By the
way im using dsl so i think u dun need the LAN or dial up.

It can make a large difference. If you still have your CD Key that came
with your computer - and that CD Key was intended for use with a Retail CD
or OEM CD or whatever - then it will only work with that TYPE of CD. If
your friends' CD is not the same type as the one that came with your
computer - the key will not function.

You have an Internet Sponsor? How neat.
I have an Internet Service provider (ISP) - but never had a sponsor. *grin*

Did you install all the drivers for your devices after reinstalling? You
would need to make sure all devices are working properly (communicating with
Windows XP) before you could use all the features of said devices.

That's not necessarily bad - but does indicate you have not installed the
device drivers for the hardware devices (sound, network, modem, etc) in your
computer.

You reformatted correctly - that's not the problem. You just have not
finished your installation. You need to install the device drivers for each
of your hardware devices (modems, sound card, video card, network cards,
etc..) so that you can utilize those devices. You need to use another
computer and the information you know about your machine (from an invoice,
by opening the machine, whatever) to go to the correct manufacturers web
site for each device, download the correct driver for Windows XP, write it
to some portable media, get it to the other machine and install it.

We might be able to help a LOT more with this if you can tell us the
make/model of the computer.
Also what do u need to connect to the internet.

Some form of modem and a way to connect that modem to some form of
communication.
By the way im using dsl so i think u dun need the LAN or dial up.

You likely need either USB or more likely - a network card (and the correct
driver so Windows XP can communicate with that network card.)

R: There is no wrong way of reformatting, and Windows does the
Installation, so you don't have it wrong, you just need to start from
scratch and slowly renew the settings you had in the previous Windows
installation.

"Basically at the bottom of the screen where the time located there are no
icons or anything"
R: You did a clean installation so everything was erased and you have to
add your icons to the system tray (notification area).

"I call my internet sponsor and they told me it's the computer fault since
it's missing a program that communicate to the internet."
R: There is no program missing you just need to create the Internet
Connection... Click on the bottom links to follow the screen shots tutorial
to help you create a new Internet Connection.

DSL Description
Digital Subscriber Line or Digital Subscriber Loop. Refers to the variety of
different types of Digital Subscriber Line protocols - high-speed data
transmission protocols that are compatible with regular copper telephone
wire. DSL is typically used to provide a continuous, high-speed connection
directly to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are several different
types of DSL (ADSL, SDSL, UADSL, etc.), and many of them make it possible to
talk on the telephone and use the Internet at the same time. It is also
called High-Speed DSL (HDSL).

To put a sound icon in the system tray
Control Panel\Sound and Audio Devices\check on Set a volume icon in the task
bar..

Also while in the Control Panel\Sound and Audio Devices\ you may need to
move the volume slider. There are various volume controls you may have to
slide to get sound up to an audible level.
