Have New Dell With WinXP Media

D

drybones

After cleaning all junk files from the Dell set up, Optimizing the
hard drive (Primary WinXP Media), insuring no spyware
was aboard and anti-virus software was working~~~~

It still takes a solid 80-90 seconds before I am able to use my
mouse or open any folder after pushing the Power button.

Hoping some kind person will assist these very old and drybones
get WinXP to start up in 30 seconds or so would be much appreciated.

Thanks for reading and replying,

The start up of Windows XP, or any other version of Windows, is very
dependent upon what background processes and applications are set to run
during startup. A clean install of Windows XP will startup in about 15-20
seconds. The more that is added, the slower it becomes.

Because any of the Norton/Symantec products (many computers come with these
pre-installed) create such a big hit on used resources (SystemWorks places
about 15-20 startup items on your computer) I now habitually remove anything
Symantec. The only thing I will install is the Norton Protected Recycle Bin
from the 2002 version of SystemWorks (or earlier). This function I would not
want to be without.

For a decent security suite you may want to try ZoneAlarm Internet Security
Suite. I now use it on all of my computers and install the trial on any
computer I build for others.

Use a copy of autoruns (freeware) from
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html to see what is starting
with Windows. Then disable, one at a time, what you think you can live
without. If disabling something causes problems, re-enable it.
