Feel free to ask anything you want regarding 3rd party software, or setting
up hardware. As long as it concerns an XP installation. Although some
hardware specific and bios specific questions have been asked and replied to
here.

You may:
get an appropriate solution
get an inappropriate solution
told by some repliers that your subject is inappropriate
get heckled by one or more repliers for your problem
be provided a website or newsgroup for a possible solution

Try to be specific as possible, giving details appropriate to the problem or
question as related specifically to your PC.

If such specifics are not provided, repliers may make assumptions which may
lead to an inappropriate solution or answer to your problem or question.

Hi,

Just wondering: Is this the place to ask questions such as "What is the
best CD burning software for XP" or may one only ask XP specific questions
here such as "How do I set up my printer"?

That was just an example of a question. I was reffering to the

Generally speaking, you should post questions that are appropriate to
the newsgroup in which you're posting. Some newsgroups have a FAQ which
clearly states posting guidelines. Some don't. Some newsgroup cultures
are fussier about adhering to the FAQ (and newsgroup culture) than
others. The MS newsgroups tend to be more forgiving, particular the
general, basic, newusers ones because most of the people asking
questions aren't sophisticated about things like Usenet. You'll find
that when a question is asked that should be posted in a different
group, most of the regulars (myself included) will just point the
poster to the right group or to where to find the right group (see link
below).

There are quite a few MS newsgroups. Here's a list of all of them:

It's fine to ask question like "What is the best CD burning software for
XP?" but the problem is that the answers are unlikely to be helpful. That's
because almost every product in every category has its adherents, and if you
ask enough people (and when you ask here, you ask a *lot* of people), you
get recommendations for almost all the choices. Unless you treat the answers
as votes (and I don't recommend that; a popularity contest is no way to
choose software) you're no better off than when you started.

Instead I would look at reviews and also ask questions of those few people
whose opinions you particularly trust. Better yest, if you're interested in
a kind of software where there are shareware choices, with free trial
versions available, try several and determine for yourself which is best for
*you*.
