hardware RAID vs. software

Is there any adventages of having hardware RAID vs. software? Other question i have is: can you add more drives once RAID is created and has data on it?
 
Hardware is better; period! Hardware is also the only way to RAID the
system and boot volumes. Hardware isn't CPU intensive, whereas s/w is. The
list goes on and on...


You can add new drives and rebuild the array, but you can't just add new
drives.

You cannot extend a software RAID, but it is - under som circumstances -
possible to extend a volume on hardware RAID 5, using diskpart.exe. And -
as Paul says - hardware is better...
