Hardware inventory

Hi,
i'm looking software for hardware inventory (device type and serial number)
to run on standalone PC. Best solution will be software, which be able to
run from CD or included in bootable CD / FDD.

Look for a product at Lavalys.com . They wrote a program called
Aida32, then changed the name of the program to Everest. It will
give you lots of hardware information, but is probably not
the tool you are looking for.

The free version of Everest is here. You can use this for
evaluation purposes if you want. Since the program did take
considerable effort to develop, if you are using the program
for commercial purposes, you should buy the versions they
offer on their website.

The BIOS on your motherboard, keeps DMI/ESCD information that
it gathers at each POST. Some motherboard makers offer a
"DMI Explorer" option in some of their utilities, and it
offers a hardware inventory of sorts. But I would not rely
on DMI, as the quality of the information leaves a lot
to be desired. It can sometimes take many BIOS releases,
before the DMI information is close to being correct.

You can find more information on DMI and SMBIOS here. You may
end up supporting both with whatever tool you end up buying,
so you should read up on both DMI and SMBIOS. The DMI standard
went end of life (EOL) on Mar31/2005.

Aida32 is great software.

If you know a little (very little is needed) VB programming it is very easy
to get system information.
