Hello, I just bought a new Dell laptop computer with windows vista premium.

The problem I have is that my little hard drive is almost always running
like crazy, even if I have 2 gig of ram inside, it can stop for a while but
anytime it will do this again.

I also have an antivirus, Kaspersky, but it's not working when this happen.

Did someone have the same problem or do you have a solution for this ?

Thank you.

it's possible that windows is still indexing the drive for the search
function. Ususally this stops when you are using the pc, but continues when
you are not. Maybe in time it will finish indexing and you will be ok, give
it some time.

Either Windows is indexing (you can turn that feature off) but it will
in time catch up and greatly slow down and then mostly stop or I think
someone mentioned that Vista can also defrag automatically without
asking, which also may cause your hard drives to grind away for what
seems like forever. The third and least likely with 2 GB of RAM is
lots of stuff is getting switched out from memory to your Virtual
Memory and back. A sure sign you don't have enough memory for the
tasks you're trying to do. To check if that's it, run some of the
applications you normally use, run several at once, then go to Task
Manager, (Alt-Ctrl-Del), then look at the performance tab. You'll see
two graphical displays update in real time. How hard your CPU is being
used and how much of your memory. If I had to guess I would say it is
indexing. Turn it off (right click on each of your hard drives,
properites, and uncheck, but wait it can take awhile to reset, don't
mess around while waiting or stop it in the middle. Can take several
minutes or longer.

Thanks for your replies , the indexing service is off, I think you'r right
about the 2 gig, back and forth in the virtual memory.

Have a nice day and take care.
