I seem to get a virus almost every day with Windows XP,
which I've never found with any previous version of
Windows. I'm constantly using virus checkers and it's
getting to the point where I'm scared to download
anything at all.

Surely it shouldn't be a full time job cleaning up my PC,
or is that just the way it's going to be from now on with
constant internet use?

You are using a firewall, have critical patches installed, and download
only from reputable sites? Should not be a problem.

Back up the partition with an imaging utility, and be almost totally safe.

Better get some better protection if you are getting any virus.

Better get some better protection if you are getting any virus.

Have an antivirus product, and a subscription to keep it current.

Apply all critical patches from update.microsoft.com

use a firewall, personal, or as part of your broadband connection.

Get another web browser (Mozilla, Opera, FIrefox) for dat-to-day use.
Use Internet Explorer only for hitting update.microsoft.com for updates.

Use an email client other than Outlook/outlook express.

You might have sypware get SyyBot and run it.
