Does anyone know if it's alright to trouble shoot a hard
drive with a windows 98 or ME startup disk.

Since this is a XP NG, the HD probably uses NTFS format, so that
W9x FD will not be able to read the HD.

And, in general, troubleshooting a HD runs the risk of wiping
out data on that HD. If you have valuable data on a HD, you
should consider a HD data recovery company, particularly if you
are an amateur.
