You're joking right? Would you drive a car that makes grinding noises when you
push the brake pedals? Would you buy a fan that makes a hellish grinding noise
when you turn it on?

Grin.. take everyones word for it, grinding noises are not something anybody
engineers into their electronics... heh

as for what is causing the noise, there are ball bearings inside the drive that
let the platters spin really really fast without rubbing against the case of the
drive. When these bearings wear out they begin to allow that rubbing to happen
which makes lots of bad things happen to the data on the platters..

Example.. rub cheek on a brand new teflon coated skillet.. now take cheek and
rub it on a running bench sander.. you'll notice the difference..
