I have a 3 yr old notebook, P4-2.8mgh, 60gigHD running windows xp. In the
last week it the hard drive started doing a prolonged intermittent spurting
process, kind of hard to explain, but like it is looking for something and
cant find it, or its in some kind of loop. It has even happened when there
are no major programs running (I viewed task manager while it was doing it).
I double checked for spy ware using Microsoft and Spybot and the machine is
clean.....

It is really irritating noise and it concerns me ... Whats going on and what
can I do?

Thanks for your help.

Someone enable "indexing"? R-click the drive icon, select properties,
bottom of the General tab.

Well, delete "indexes" already created and select "Close and Stop" :-)
....then !

That will use idle time to index the files, or you could pop taskmanager
open and "sort" by CPU usage to see what was active at the time the
"chatter" starts.
