Hi all, I have a Win2000 PC whose slave drive is acting up. I know
it developed some bad sectors and would like to mark them as bad.
Is there any software that I could use to do this? Perhaps something
like scandisk? Thanks in advance!!!

Chkdsk is the W2k version of scandisk, and much more powerful.
From a command prompt, to see the syntax, run
chkdsk /?
I believe chkdsk /r will identify/mark bad sectors.
That drive may be going bad; increasing numbers of bad sectors are a
symptom. I'd get everything of value off the drive to a safer place if
that's the case, and download and run the manufacturer's diagnostic
utility. Drives have a long warranty life, and if their diagnostic finds
failures that it can't correct, tech support will tell you whether the
drive is eligible for free replacement under warranty. You pay only cost
of shipping the bad drive back to them, before or after they ship you
the new one. If after, you have a chance to setup/test the new drive,
and move the data onto it, and use their shipping materials when you're
done.

Thank you for your reply.
What a pleseant surprise to find that chkdsk for W2K
has all this functionality!! Especially after it was demoted
and virtually replaced by scandisk.

I will see what drive it is, get the diagnostics utilities
from its manufacturer and we'll see what happens.
Thanks again for your help.
