Hard Drive Problem

Bruce

Hi all,

I just started having problems with my slave HD, which is a WD 100 GB drive.
All of the sudden, it does not show up on My Computer (or Explore, etc).
When I go to device manager, it is listed and shown as working properly.
Unplugging the drive actually speeds up the booting process, which I noticed
has been slower recently. As a result, I timed the boot process both ways,
and found that it boots in a minute & 21 seconds with the slave drive
unplugged, and in 2 minutes 55 seconds with it plugged in. I actually had a
problem last week with the computer not reading the drive, then it began
reading it again, now it doesn't. Any ideas what the problem may be?

Problem may be that it's dying, your power cables cables
have poor contact, data cable is damaged or not fully seated
at either end, or power supply is struggling, insufficient
or failing.

Next chance you get, (if you get another chance) able to
access drive, copy off any important data. You could check
jumpers and try it alone as single drive (change jumper) on
2nd IDE channel.

Run the manufacturer's diagnostics.

I started copying data from the drive onto dvds last night because I
suspected a problem brewing. Unfortunately, I didn't finish and intended to
finish it today. I'll try some of your suggestions. Thanks.
