hard drive password

I was wondering if there's a way to set password so it's required
before a particular physcial drive can be accessed. With that, even
someone sitting in front of the computer can't access what's on that
drive without knowing the password. I would imagine if someone hacks
into the computer remotely, the password would have the same effect in
preventing access to the drive, unless the hacker also hacked the
password.

You can set a BIOS password so a password is required to boot your pc.
or
you could create an encrypted, password protected disk / partition or
folder. look at http://www.truecrypt.org/, read the instructions,
create a test are and done.

Thanks very much for the link. That was an extremely useful utility,
but unfortunately it was not exactly what I had in mind. I was hoping
for something that would ask for the password each and every time
there's an attempt to access the hard drive.
