hard drive partitions

Hello, can someone advise me please.

My hard drive is split (on delivery) into 2 partitions , the Vista (C:)
drive (about 30 Gb) and the Data (E:) (about 70Gb).

At present the E drive is empty (I have never used it) , the C drive is
about 80% full.

1) why is the Data partition named E: rather than D: ?

2) can I, should I, rename it ?

3) if I move datafiles across to the E: drive will the registry get fouled
up, i.e. will my programs be able to find their data files ?

Thanks in advance

Presumably your CD/DVD drive is currently D: You can shuffle the drive
letters around in Disk Management (right-click Computer then Manage) but you
might be better off deleting "Data" and resizing C: to use the whole disk.

GPARTED (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/) is a free utility to do this.

Because your CD/DVD drive is probably D:\.

No, the fact that the data drive is called E:\ is of no importance.

No, you can move your data with no problems. In fact, you may wish to move
your Documents, Music, Pictures folders there. See this information from
Brink for how to do this:

To move the Documents folder to another location (like another partition or
hard drive), right-click on the Documents folder and click Properties, then
you'll find a tab called Location. Use the Move-button to move the folder
to another location.

You can't move the programs you've installed though. You would need to
uninstall them and then reinstall them. That's probably what you're
thinking about regarding the registry. Generally the data is what is taking
up the room so see how things look after you've moved it over to E:\.
