hard drive partition

M

MS33

I am one of many who have experienced the 137 gb
limitation in XP for large hard drives. Mine is 160 and
have sp1 and the hot fix mention in the article about
enabling LBA and it is enabled and I have followed the
instructions in that section. My bios also reads my hard
drive at the full capacity so I know it's not a bios
thing. Can I use xp to create a partion for the
unallocated space it shows in disk managment and if so,
what type of partition should I use? I bought partition
commander and wonder if I use xp to partition the
unallocated space, if there would be a need for this
program. I'm kinda hesitant in using it since I do not
know much about partitioning and just wanted some
advice. Since reading the instructions on it, it makes
you little scary since after installing it you can have
boot up errors which can be fixed, but wonder if it's too
much hassle.

If you formatted prior to enabling BigLba then enabled BigLba you will have
unallocated space. You can use disk management to format this space,
resulting in a second partition - no need to use third party tools; However
there have been posts from MVPs suggesting that this could lead to data
corruption/loss.
Therefore may be better to delete partition and completely reformat.
You can use a third party tool to merge the unallocated space to yr existing
partition, without any resulting data loss, as to whether the MVP warning
still stands?
