It says on the box 120GB. That isn't 114GB. But I'll go back and look
at the math.

The only math I was correcting was your incorrect assertion that 122 billion
bytes is equal to 122 GB, as the subject of this thread, along with the
original post, assume. This is incorrect. However, I originally made no
attempt to address the discrepancy between the formatted capacity of your HD
and the capacity rated on the box.

no no,
it does not change the capacity of hhd if it is formated or not.

It does. Formatting allocates space for the file table(s). FAT16 or
FAT32 (File Allocation Table). Not nearly enough to account for the
1000/1024 difference, however.
if you put 100 eggs in a row, or you put them in 10*10 square, will it
change the amount of eggs ?

Formatting allows you to find where you put the eggs! :) (FAT)

yes,
but if you see 2 HDD at the same time, at the same best buy, at the same
shelf, and one is 120 gigs, and another one is 114gig, which one will you
take ? :)

For most people, a "thousand" or "1K" is 1000. But computer people use
2**10 = 1024 . A million is 10**6 for most people but 2**20 = 1,048,576
for computer types. Likewise for "giga" or 10**9. The difference isn't
much but it sure does make paranoids think somebody is stealing their disk
space.

in fact it MAKES me feel like I am a victim of commercial,
I have no problem understanding it, I am using computer for 15 years or so,
but you can try to explain what is the difference for my mom or so

I have a Maxtor 120 GB hard drive. When I formatted it, it said the
capacity was 114 GB, but when I right click on the drive and look at
the properties, it says its free space 122 GB in the pie chart and says
114.

Consider yourself lucky.. you lose only 6GB on the labelled value... I bought a
200GB drive and I lose 14GB !!!!! (well I guess it's not lost if it was never
there in the first place.. but you know what I mean ;-)

Regards,
Chris
