I leave my computer on a lot Windows XP Pro I kept it set
to turn off the monitor and hard drive at 20 and 30
minutes respectively. Over the past several months I was
losing connection to the router and to the web. I bought a
new router and that solved the connection to the web, but
I was still losing connection to router. I would have to
restart machine or go into settings for the network card
change it from auto sense to something else and back. I
would only lose connection wile the computer was idle and
a Windows 98 machine hooked to the same router never loses
connection and was set the same way. So I bought a new
network card and the same thing. Now I have discovered
that if I do not let the hard drive turn off the Win XP
Pro machine will not lose connection.

I have looked on TechNet and Google and can not find
anything. Anyone heard of this? Thanks.

Hi, Sammy -

If you look at the network card's properties in Device
Manager you'll see an option to prevent the PC from
shutting off the network card to save power. That'd be
my first choice ;-)

Hope this helps -

Thanks Allan I will try it.
