Hard drive froze during NTFS Formatting

I was running XP Pro from the boot and during the format and partition phase it froze at 97% complete. After 1 1/2 hours I reset the system, but now the computer will not read that drive at all. The XP system set up will allow me to modify my slave drive, and it recognizes that there is a master, and the amount of drive space in the master, but it will not let me access it or format it. When it attempts to complete the installation I get the message that the drive is corrupt.

Is there a fix other than buying a new hard drive?

See if it will do a quick format. If it will do a quick format but not a full format then you got some damaged areas on the disk.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I get no option to quick format or do a regular format. the options to format are denied for that drive, but are still available for the other drive

Any other advice?

Hi!

I had the same problem on XP Home with an external Maxtor HD.
I downloaded and installed MaxBlast 3 For Windows from
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/files/maxblast3win.exe
This utility was able to partition and format my HD completely without
any problem where XP had failed.
if your HD is not a Maxtor HD, you might find a similar tility on the
manufacturer's site.

One of:
- bad HD
- BIOS capacity issues
- incorrect geometry in CMOS (use LBA)
- DDO (e.g. MaxBlast, EZ-IDE, Ontrack Disk Manager...) issues
