Hard drive failure (does not spin)

E

Erik

I have an 7200rpm 120GB IBM Deskstar manufactured March, 2002.

Disk no longer spins. Drive had some intermittent failures to spin
but now does not spin at all. No strange noises were ever heard.

Whenever drive has been spinning, data is in fine condition.

Suggestions on how to get this disk to spin OR
information on feasibility of parting out an identical to fix this one
would be appreciated.

Finally, recommendations for a data recovery service that can recover
my data at a reasonable/low cost.

Thanks,
Erik

Ohhh...IBM drive fails?? how strange!!!!

unscrew the drive , very carefully with a small screwdriver push the
platters (from the center holes) to spin up, cover the drive carefully with
the cover again , read alla your data and then practice your drive throwing
skills!

If you can see your data listed in Dos, you can copy them to another drive/or
burner. I've done this when my drive was in a fit.

one of
- the heads stuck to the platters. try twisting the drive abrubtly.
- the motor shorted. very expensive data recovery.
- the motor driver failed. you should see burns on a small chip.
- DFT doesn't see the drive. replace the controller board.

Check the power connections. I have a 60 gig drive that failed to spin up
a couple of times. I jiggled the power plug and it came good.

It would be a pity to discard a drive for something so simple.
