hard drive continuosly runs- just installed XP

I just upgraded to XP from ME and my hard drive won't
stop running. Any ideas?
 
It is probably either badly defragmented or nearly full.

What size H/D is it and what how full is it?
 
Or the PC has a small amount of RAM and the system is continually swapping
in and out from the pagefile.
Likely with 128 MB or less.
