Hard drive Churning suddenly

I have a Pentium 4 2.8 with 512 ram. Suddenly my drive is churning all the
time and there hesitation when I double click on icons to open applications
and or links. I havd defragged, disabled Indexing, did a virus scan with
current definitions, did a disk clean and ad ware and spy bot programs. Any
ideas? I can figure out why it started suddenly.

Go to run,type:cm
At the curser type:CHKDSK C: /
Agree to restart,then type:EXIT Restart computer.
 
Thanks, just ran it a few minutes ago. Will post here if it solved problem.
