Hard drive activity light indication problems

One of my computers, a Dell Inspiron 600m running Windows XP, began showing a
blinking red light in place of the normally green hard drive activity
indicator light. What does this mean? Can anyone help me?

I take it that you very carefully read the user manual, such as it is?
According to it there is no red flashing light anywhere on this model of
computer. There _is_ the possibility of an orange flashing light but that
has nothing to do with the hard drive -- it is a warning for the battery
condition. This light is right next to the hard drive activity light. Four
indicators all together on the right-hand lid hinge IIRC from a quick glance.
