Good evening all -

At times that I'm not using my computer, it sounds like something is
constantly accessing the hard drive. It's occurring every 1.5-2 seconds.
The sound is very faint but if I'm sitting at the computer for a while, it
can become irritating. Does anyone know how I can tell which program(s)
that may be accessing the drive constantly? I've disable the antivirus and
firewalls programs and the access still exists.

I'm using WinXP w/SP1 with Norton Antivirus, Sygate Personal Firewall,
Microsoft Office 2003, Roxio Media Creator, Intel Accelerator, and other
small programs. This is a 250gb drive with all security updates and patches
on a Dell Dimension 4100 P3 933mhz computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

just xp mapping the drive for quicker access.
but anyways run spybot from safer-networking.org and update
and scan for bugs.

Hi,

Sounds like the indexing service at work. You can disable it by checking the
properties of the drive by right clicking it in Windows Explorer. It's on
the general tab.

Turn off the indexing service. Go to start | run | services.msc.
Scroll down to the indexing service, stop it, then set it to disabled.

Two things: A limited period every three days would be the optimisation
of the disk layout, aimed at speeding up the loading of programs by
putting needed files next to each other.

Second - and more likely - the Indexing facility indexing documents so
as to speed up searches on the basis of text in them. This is really
only of value to Offices with large numbers of documents searched in
this way. In Explorer, open up Search, and take its Preferences -
select 'Without indexing' . Then in Control Panel - Admin Tools -
Services, double click 'Indexing Service', set its Startup type to
Disabled, and Apply.
