1. Make sure there is no floppy in the drive (if she has one). If there
was one, take it out and reboot.

2. Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the
drive mftr.'s website. Create a bootable cd or floppy, boot the
affected computer with it, and do a thorough test. If the drive fails,
replace it.

3. If this isn't your cup of tea - and there is no shame in admitting
that it isn't - take the machine to a professional computer repair shop
(not your local version of BigStoreUSA).
