Are there any good free utilities out there that anyone has used that will
allow you to recover/salvage data from a hard disk that has had it's
partition removed?

Basically I am looking for a tool that can read the HD at the lowest level
regardless of the OS/partitions etc...

Thanks,

Brad

Dont know of any free ones that are any good but I have used ERD 2003
Commander to recover data from lost partitions many times and it works
very well.

I've used Ontrack Recovery. $100 ish, works excellently. I've never seen a
free utility, you can try the Ontrack software for free- it shows you what it
can recover, you just have to pay to actually recover!

I corrupted a Mirrored Set, deleted the partitions, and it have 47K
files (all our camera images) on it. When I tried to recover it I was
unable.

I purchase a product called "RecoverMyFiles" (both Floppy and Win
versions came with the on-line download) and installed the drive in
another machine - I didn't want to risk writing anything to that drive.
I did a sector search and it found EVERY file, but they were named
RECOVEREDFILE00001.JPG. It didn't maintain the directory structure or
the file names, but the extensions were correct Since I maintained a
defragged system, in directory order, it's been a little easier to group
the files back into folders.

I've used it on Window 2000 Server drives, XP Drives, etc... But the OS
you boot has to support the Drive Format type (NTFS, FAT32, etc...).

I would try BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30
day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

Boot the floppy, Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on
Partition work. There you should be able to highlight the apparent free
space and click Undelete. That will search for the signature of a
partition that has been removed from the Partition table (the usual
implication of removing a partition) and if found restore it

I don't think you'll find a useful free utility. However, check
www.runtime.org for their Get Data Back offerings. I've used the NTFS
version on a hard drive that the vendor's diagnostic said "it was fini".
GDB worked wonders.
