Hard disk problem

Hello,

I have the following message on POST.

Award Bios v6.0
Asus A7M266 ACPI BIOS Revision 1007

Detecting Primary Master ... Maxtor 85250D6
Primary Slave ... Maxtor 6E040l0
Secondary Master ... TDK CDRW241040B
Secondary Slave ... none

Primary Slave drive fails

Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter SETUP

====================================================
on SETUP, the BIOS fails to auto-detect the Primary Slave drive.

However, I am able to re-install Windows XP and Mandrake Linux 1.0 on
their respective partition of the Primary slave drive. I've just
re-started WinXP from this slave drive after reinstalling it.

It appears that the hard drive in question is accessible by both
WindowsXP and Linux installation programs. Although the BIOS initially
detects the drive and then decides that the drive fails.

I think the problem is caused by the BIOS, not the drive. What is your
opinion?

Hi,

I had the same problem with two different Maxtor Drives within the last
three months.

Go to www.maxtor.com and download the PowerMax diagnostic software.

When I ran PowerMax, I found both drives I tested, to be faulty.

As one of the drives was within warranty, Maxtor swapped it for a new one.

If your drive is shown to be faulty, you can check if it is still within
warranty by visiting 'Warranty Services' on the Maxtor website.
