Dear all,

Can you please help me with Hard Disk External Problem?

When I connect Hard Disk External to Windows XP PC with USB port, it
has shown the Hard Disk is detected but it doesn't show the letter as
a removeable drive (E:) in Window Explorer.

Then I checked it in Disk Management in order to, if maybe it would
show after change drive letter, but in fact it also doesn't show.

Anyone have ideas to fix it because I have got important file in it,
please help.

Thanks in advance,

Susan

Hello Susan,

Some question:

What kind of external hard drive is this? Is it one you bought as a
complete unit with the hard drive already encased in the unit, or is
it one where you installed a hard drive yourself in an "enclosure"?
If it's the latter, is the drive's jumper set to Master?
Have you tried to attach it to a different USB port?
When you say it doesn't show in Disk Management, you mean it isn't
listed at all?
Does it show in Device Manager (Start => Run => devmgmt.msc), either
in Disk Drives, Storage Volumes, or USB Controllers?
In Device Manager is there a yellow alarm against it?

Hi Craymore,

It is a USB External Hard Drive 80GB (Hitachi) and I bought it already
encased in the unit and the jumper also set to Master.

I already try to attach it to a different USB port and other USB ports
with other PCs and the first it show the drive (Storage Volumes) and
it is immeditely disappear again (Not detected), then it doesn't show
everywhere even either in Device Manager and Disk Management.

Any ideas please help...

Thanks in advance,

Susan

Hello again Susan,

It sounds like the drive may not have been formatted. Do you know if
it was?
When you go to Disk Management, maximize the window in case it's not
in view, but further down. If it's there, right-clcik on it and selct
Format.
I've worked with a number of such drives and I've run into the
situation where it isn't recognized as a USB device. In this case I
had to remove the drive from it's case (enclosure) - I gather you can
as you said you can see the jumper - set the jumper to Slave and
install it inside the computer itself as a Slave drive on the same
cable as your main drive. It may be recognized there in Disk
Management.
Something to try first, though, is to try it in another computer if
you can. Either way, if it's not formatted, you want to do that first.

Since you said that you had data on the hd that you did not want to lose-try
to recover data before formatting the drive. Formatting will delete all
data.
