Hard disk / ATA level question

Hiya all, got a simpleton question to ask, apologies if in the wrong location.

I have a four/five year old Time PC, (cor bless 'em), something like a 1.5 - 1.8 GHz processor, about 40 GB hard disk, 512 RAM, running XP, pretty much up to date (definitely have SP2). Does not have the EnableBigLba DWORD set up yet, let alone turned on.

I also have about 18 hours of DV tapes I want to edit, assemble on to DVD and generally fiddle with, and so am considering buying a 300 GB HD to use pretty much solely for video use.

Mobo is a MS6382 Ver:2 according to the printing on it. I am proving completely inept at finding any definitive answer to whether there is any BIOS limitation or mobo speed limitation on running this kind of disk. Some of the stuff I have read seems to indicate that XP SP2 is not independent of BIOS in terms of size limitations (i.e. 137 GB limit) but I am not sure enough to lay out £80 on a (potentially) unuseable drive.

So my questions are :

1) Is there any BIOS/mobo limitation that could prevent me running a disk of this size, given that I currently run a 40GB disk under XP SP2?

2) Is there something I can find in my BIOS that will tell me whether I can run a disk a) this size, and b) at ATA 133 speed?

PS Also read something suggesting you need 80 socket flat cable for ata133, pretty sure mine is 40. Is that also a potential blocker?

Many thanks
Andy

I'll answer the easy question first ...

There is no such thing as an 80 pin ribbon cable, they are are 40pin ... however the newer cables are 80col cables and I do advise using one with the new HD.

ATA 133 is the supposed transfer rate to & from the HD ... you won't find it in the BIOS.

Yep, could well be, but it is not a real 'problem' as XP can, using Disk Management, format the rest of the drive for you ... DO NOT be tempted to use FDISK

If you keep your 40 as the master and add the 300 as a slave, using a new 80col ribbon cable, then use XP disk management ... :)

You may need to tell your BIOS to use LBA mode ... try Auto first if available.

The MS 6382 MB is a very common OEM MB found in many, err, computers. ;)

Thanks for that, much appreciated.

I shall acquire my new cable, if necessary, and then get my disk.
