Hangs after starting up

Hi guys!
My computer starts fine and loads the Antivirus (AVG) and then volume
control, but after these two have loaded, the system hangs for about 90
seconds.
The cursor moves around without a problem, but no probram can be opened (not
even the start button).
This is a fresh install and there are no programs installed whatsoever.
What can it be?

Windows XP Professional, SP2

To compare opening windows w/ anti virus and w/o for speed, simply
go to run, type:services.msc In msc locate the anti-virus service(s),double
click,select disable,do this for all its services,close out msc,restart
xp.Anti
virus and thier settings drain the OS max,you can also, disable some of its
services such as auto update (which some run every few minutes).......

This is the same behavior I was experiencing (See my post "Windows XP Hangs
at Startup" posted 11/03/2006). I would be interested to know if you find the
same fix. As I said in my post, when I disabled the service "Workstation,"
everything was fine again.
The reply to my post links to explanations and ramifications of disabling
"Workstation."
