My computer went through a normal auto update for the XP Pro operating system
yesterday morning. Since then, all parts of my MS office XP pacakge hang the
moment I try to access files (using the "open files" icon, File and Open,
save as or any other method of accessing files)

uninstall KB908531 and check for the latest info in the windowsupdate
group. there appears to be a conflict with hp software.
some of the mvp's say you can disable the share to web files in startup
(msconfig) or taskmgr instead.
look for
hpgs2wnd.exe
hpgs2wnf.exe

Thanks for this, I tried it and it has resolved the problem. However, Windows
update now eeps telling me I need to install an update - guess what - it's
KB908531. I suppose I will just have to keep ignoring it for now. Typical of
MS though, is it not, to auto install an update without checking that it is
compatible with other widely used software?

Yes the update is also waiting on my taskbar to be re-installed. Careful
how you shutdown... and choose the option that will not install.
I tried to post a question on the windowsupdate group on how to delete this
from the install icon shield. I have not checked to see if the post has
appeared yet.

Thanks for this advice. I have spent two frustrating days trying to resolve
this problem with no luck. However, having carried out your instructions the
problem seems to have been resolved now. Thanks again.
