I have been trying to resolve a problem booting into Safe Mode due to
the error message: “hal.dll missing or corrupt…”

The T2893 OEM version does not give, or have, access to the “Recovery
Console” as an option on the Startup Menu. The only CD I have is the
“Recovery Disk” and this only allows a repeat of the initial
installation; i.e. I can’t boot from it.

The command console indicates:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>dir hal.dll/s
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 1450-F32C
File Not Found"


The Q310994 workaround requires booting from a floppy drive, which this
unit does not have.

As far as I can tell (I have no idea); boot.ini appears to be OK.

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
timeout=30

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

In trying to fix this, I did d/l the hal.dll file in question and have
it in Desktop as per:

C:\WINDOWS\system32
Application Extension
(Archive Root Directory)
94 KB

I also seem to have the file(s) needed to expand it if necessary; i.e.

C:\WINDOWS\I386\sp2.cab

C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab

This is where I am stymied; I don’t know how to copy the file to Windows
Directory given the stumbling blocks noted above.

What baffles me is; if my unit had a floppy drive, I could d/l the
Startup (6 floppy discs worth) from MS and proceed to install the
Recovery Console, fix.boot, &etc …. and like that. It would seem to me
(and I am told it is just a bad assumption) that I should be able to d/l
the Startup files to Desktop, and then burn them to a CD-R, and boot
from there.

What leads me to suspect this is:

At the MS-DOS prompt type the below command.
expand x:\i386\hal.dl_ y:\windows\system32\hal.dll
In the above example "x" would be the letter of your CD-ROM drive and
"y" the letter of the drive your operating system is installed on. If
you need to determine the drive letters of your devices type "map".
Additional information about the expand command can be found on our
expand help page.

Although I don’t have the reference in front of me; I also came across
something that someone tossed off as if the sol’n was too rudimentary to
deserve elaboration. It might be so; I just have NO idea what it means.

To get past the inability to install files in XP (or anything
past WinME), you need to disable "rollback", then reboot; MS help files
and the online KB should tell you how (I'm not sure for XP Home or I'd
give you instructions). Do make sure to re-enable it when you're
done.

If anyone feels up to the challenge, perhaps they can help me sort this
out.

Evidently you are able to start Windows in some fashion -eg. "I did d/l the
hal.dll file in question ..."

If you believe the Recovery Console can solve this issue, download SP2 and
you can install the recovery console using its winnt32.exe file:

As I mentioned, as far as I know, my boot.ini is OK. Both lines, as
quoted above, indicate only 1 partition. If someone who actually
understands this stuff sees there is something irregular with mine, I
would like to learn of it.

The Rx offered further along the page requires booting from the CD to
access Recovery Console. As I mentioned above; this is not an option for
my OEM.

This one is a ‘poser’; eh?

That sounds nifty to me. I have SP2 now as I assume you noticed from the
s’ware & browser info I provided by way of introduction in my initial Q.

“winnt32.exe” is under: C:\WINDOWS\I386, which I also referenced.

Please bear in mind; most of this material means about as much to me as
a copy of “CALCVLVS” would mean to a flounder. If I am to understand I
can install RC by re-downloading SP2, or if I am supposed to exit
Firefox or something …. well; I’ll go bail and do it. I just need
clarification.
