Had to reformat hard drive....

I have MCE 2005. I've got two sticks of RAM at 512MB per. I also have it
hooked networked with my XBOX 360.

I had a power outage that shut the system down and when it tried to reboot,
it would get to XP splash screen and reboot.

Reformatted HD. Now system is reading just over half of the RAM. I can't
run more than a few programs without getting "System Resource Low" bubble
popping up.

In Task Manager on the Performance tab my Physical Memory reads the full
amount(1,046,296kb). The "system Cache" runs over 357,000kb of the RAM and
"Available" is just over 239,268. This is with only Outlook and Internet
Explorer running.

Before, in my Resource Monitor, it would read both sticks of RAM and how
much of them was running. Now there is only one. I pulled one stick out and
then switched and their both reading less than 512MB

I can't tell what's eating up all of my RAM.

Open Control Panel - System - General. In the Computer: section at
the bottom of the window it will tell you how much physical RAM
Windows has detected. This will normally be the full amount of your
installed RAM less any amount that is used for "shared video".

What does your computer report there?

"System Resources Low" errors were commonplace with Windows 98/Me but
have a different meaning and are very much rarer with Windows XP.

Can you give me the exact wording from the popup?

Good luck

Thanks for the reply.

It does read 1.0GB of RAM.

When I get the "System Resource Low" window it says,

"System resources are running low on this computer. To free resources,
close down some applications that are currently running."

Before I reformatted, I could run several programs at once. Now, I run the
Media Center and surf the net and I could get the SRL pop up.

If I open the Task Manager, the Physical Memory reads a Total of
"1046296kb". That's the gig of RAM. Avaiable reads "157420kb" and system
cache says "300596kb". I don't know what Kernel Memory is or Commit Charge.

This is running explorer, media center and Yahoo Messenger. Before this
wouldn't put a dent in my RAM.

Nothing on the Processes tab in Task Manager looks like it's eating it alll
up.

Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated.

The following article is for Server 2003 although it seems quite
relevant to Windows XP as well. In XP the Administrative Tools are in
the Control Panel.
