Memory shown in windows XP is not correct

When I purchased my PC it had 256MB of Ram, since then I have changed the
memory to be 2 sticks of 512mb each (8X64).
The total should be 1gb of ram. It shows up at boot but when Windows XP
comes up it tells me that it only sees 256MB of ram. Seems strange since
there is only 2 512mb sticks. What do I do to get Windows Xp to see the 1gb
of ram.
The system runs like a dog with no legs. What happened?

Hi,

Run the Everest utility (installation not required). Expand
Motherboard and click on SPD. Does it show two different sticks in the
top section?

Also go to Start - Run and type msconfig then press enter.
Click on the Boot.ini tab then Advanced Options.
Make sure /MAXMEM= is unchecked and the dropdown box is empty.
