Hack attack? Or just wrong settings?

I've been getting this error message for sometime now and
would like to get rid of it, if anyone could offer some help. I have a
broadband connection that was setup via myself with an installation
disc. Occasioinally I'll get this error message, but my connection is
good, my modem seems to be working just fine. I have no problem
getting around the web, just this pesky error message.
After I close the window I'll usually get another window that
says attempting to connect through WAN Miniport (pppoe). So I figure
my settings are not just right or maybe someone's trying to hack in? I
don't know much about that. Maybe I'm being pinged? Whatever that
means. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well what exactly does the error message say ?
