Thermal Interface Material Replacement for Fan Heatsink
Thermal interface material is required for proper heat transfer from
the processor to the fan heatsink. The boxed Intel Pentium 4 processor will
have thermal interface material attached to the bottom of the heatsink.

Thermal Interface Material Attached to the Heatsink

Intel does not recommend the removal of the thermal interface
material located on the bottom of the boxed processor fan heatsink. Removal
of this material may cause damage to the processor and will void the boxed
processor warranty. If you must remove and re-use the fan heatsink, it will
require replacement. Also, if the thermal interface material is at all
damaged, you must also replace the fan heatsink. Contact Intel Customer
Support to receive a replacement fan heatsink.

This right from the Thermal Management page for Intel S-775 (I-600 series)
processors. The HS/Fan unit on these is extremely big and heavy with copper
insert on contact area. Much different than what we have been seeing with
past CPU HS units. It also has a big quiet, low rpm fan. Wonder if they pay
for the thing if it needs to be taken off?...Bet not.

Don't understand the part about the TIM being damaged requires a whole new
heatsink. It's baloney. There's no danger to your CPU from
removing(correctly) the TIM and replacing it with another TIM or thermal
paste.

Yea, I second that. First thing I do is remove the Intel thermal tape and
use paste instead.Just clean it up good with a credit card and Isopropyl
alcohol.

I agree totally. The thing is that according to Intel, it will void the
warrantee if you do not get a new HS if the TIM is damaged.

If a problem ever arose with my cpu I would just tell Intel that I was using
an aftermarket HSF and not their HSF. I do own a Vantec Aeroflow HSF but I
use the Intel stock HSF with paste because it is quieter.

Personally, I am not going to worry much.....:-) The HS/Fan unit on this
I-630 775 is huge. The largest I have ever seen from Intel. From
appearances, it looks like it should be a good quality unit. I was going to
clean the TIM off and add some thermal compound, but since some small
modifications to improve the airflow I am seeing some good temps now so I am
leaving as-is. It is the quietest thing in the box too. Quieter than the
80mm fans in the front set on low speed. I never hear the CPU fan at all.

You don't understand yet you say there is NO danger........., or is it you
can't handle being told to do something by a far more experienced source,
such as Intel. Why must some people fiddle where there is no fiddling
required?

Yeah really, man. Unlike in 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia' where Johnny
really had no choice.
