Grouping daily transactions in a pivot table by month - CANNOT GROUPTHAT SELECTION ERROR

Any idea why I continue to get the error message "CANNOT GROUP THAT
SELECTION ERROR" when I try to group a table by month using a Pivot
Table.

My data shows

Date Amount
1/1/08 100
1/4/08 150
2/3/08 225
2/8/08 300
Etc.

Previously I would just use the Grouping Option to group by month
(i.e., by right clicking in the date field within the pivot table, and
then choosing Group and Show Detail, then grouping by month.

But for unknown reason, I get the "cannot group that selection" error
when I click Group and show detail.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If there is anything in that column other than dates (stray text, even a
blank cell), then you cannot group the values. Took me a couple hours one
day to figure this out.
