grey field and double spacing

Two issues:

1) All the sudden one day on one particular document, all text below
certain point (and any I add below that point) has a grey field behin
it. What is this for and how do I get rid of it?

2) I have a document that when I enter a carriage return, the next lin
under is double spaced even though in Format | Paragraph, "Lin
Spacing" is set at "single." How did this happen and how do I fix it?

2. Check under para formatting for Space Before and Space After settings
too.

1. Is this field grey all the time of only when you try to move the cursor
into the area? It could be because that part of the document is protected.
It could also be because somehow the background has grey paragraph shading
(Format, Borders and Shading dialog). It could be just a big field.
