I need to change gray color around paper
can any body help me

That's a function of Windows, not Word. Specifically, desktop appearance.

I don't believe this is possible - it's not a windows-recognosed component
of a window, it's part of what Word fills the window with, and Word doesn't
provide the option - AmiPro did, more than ten years ago and I used to like
it but, ultimately, it is just cosmetic.

I can change mine. It was dark royal blue and it's now grey-green. (And so
am I - I really need to change this color.) I changed the color scheme and
that did it.

(Of course that changes more than just the background but it does change the
color behind the "piece of paper" in Word.)

I wasn't sure about this. I didn't think the colour behind the page in Print
Layout constituted Application Background but I did try changing it anyway
before I posted - and nothing changed except that I got a very brief flash
of the colour I had chosen (bright yellow so there would be no mistake) when
I closed Word.

I've gone back and checked and the dialog says that a Windows and Buttons
setting other than Windows Classic will override it (I've got used to XP now
and find Classic looks dated) so I changed to Windows Classic and tried
again - still no effect. So what else do I need to set to do this? No matter
what I change it stays resolutely grey.

Same thing for me. (I used screaming hot pink) Then I changed the theme and
that did it. If, like Suzanne says, it could vary with the different
Word/Windows versions - Word 2003 and Windows XP Pro.

Well, I don't know - nothing I try works - other applications are happy to
use my colour but not Office ones. Windows XP Pro, Office 2003.

When I set the Application background on Word 2000/Win Me - the background
behind document windows takes the colour, but even then not the grey around
the page image in Print layout view.

There are more interesting things to do with my time
