I am having chronic problems with my OS. Here is my configuration:

Laptop Gatewat NX560XL
Processor
(2)Intel #6e8, 2000 MHz
667MHz external bus

BIOS
Gateway 71.06 06/23/2006

Memory
Upgrade
2048MB physical
90% free resources
2 memory slots, 0 free (1024+1024)

Video
Upgrade
Graphics Adapter: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)
Screen Area/Colors: 1360x1024 pixels, 16 million colors
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

Operating System
Upgrade
Windows 6.0.6000 6.0.6000 (Windows 6.0.6000 6.0.6000 )
Original setup date: 9/17/2007
DirectX Version: 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)
SWAP FILE DISABLED
File cache managed by Windows

I keep having tiny multicolored lines appear across my screen while in
Windows. It is not the screen, because they move when I scroll down a page.
Any game I run (Oblivion(I can load the game, but after a minute of playing,
small objects, and large lines randomly start appearing) Supreme
Commander(starts, but crashes)) does not work. I have run Futuremark, but it
crashes before the first test. I've updated my drivers, and played around
wiht them for hours with no luck. I know these things should work, because
they worked fine back in March when I last tried them.

I think it is a conflict between my drivers and Directx, but I am not sure.
Any ideas?

Hi scorpio,

I have noticed 3 main points with your post. Firstly, you have used an
upgrade version of Vista. There is nothing wrong with that, but if you refer
to my post 'Clean Install Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media' in the newsgroup
'Windows Vista Installation and Setup' you will find detailed instructions on
performing a clean installation. Secondly, you have "SWAP FILE DISABLED". You
should never disable the swap file, or page file to give it its correct name,
because it is an essential system file and some routines in the operating
system actually expect it to be available and functioning. You should allow
the system to control the page file settings. Thirdly, you are still using a
graphics driver provided by Microsoft. The driver provided by Microsoft on
the Vista disk is sufficient to allow the system to work out of the box, but
it is advisable to check the manufacturers website for updated drivers. This
applies to other hardware in your machine as well. Only get hardware updates
from Microsoft for Microsoft devices - all other hardware should be updated
from the relevant manufacturers website.
