Graph Application Server major problem

I have some Powerpoint presentations that I prepared in November.

Now - when I try to edit a chart (by double clicking) I get a message:
"Microsoft can't start the application required to open this object."

If I click the Yes=repair option then the installation of the application
server fails.

I have tried re-registering Graph
("C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Graph.exe" /regserver)
and no change.

I have tried re-installing MSOffice 2002 - no change.
I have installed all Office updates - no change.

I can add a new chart to a slide and edit and open it in Graph.
But - when I save the PPT and re-open it the same problem occurs with the
new chart.

I have tried disabling my AV software (AVG) - no change.

I am running Windows Xp Pro - SP2 - with latest updates installed.

I think the the only updates ot my machine in the last month are the
monthly Microsoft updates and defragmenting one of my disc partitions
(not the C: partition).

I use Thunderbird for e-mail and have extensive spam and antivirus
filters running.
I use Firefox for internet (and MSIE only for the Microsoft sites)
so would be extremely surprised if my machine was infected.

Does anyone have any idea
a) How to fix this?
b) What would have caused it?

I have seen a few other reports (dated November 2005) in Google searches
for this problem (with no solutions).

This is a major problem for me as I do a lot of work automating and
preparing PowerPoint presentations.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Not to be unduly remedial, but you have followed the steps in this faq,
correct?

** Can't edit Org Chart, Graph, Excel (error msg: "server application,
source file, or item can't be found")
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00236.htm

I would try:
Unplugging from the internet, disabling all the anti-everything you have
running, turn off any office plug-ins to your anti-everythings and re-try

Run a search for other instances of Graph.exe

See if running as an admin on the machine fixes the problem (if so, it is
probably a rights issue)

Thanks - yes - tried all that.

The weird bit is being able to create charts but not edit them once graph
is closed.
It's like something has messed with the prog-id or registry settings so
that the Ole server settings have changed.

And particularly surprising that de-installing and re-installing office
had no effect.

Any further help or suggestions really welcome.

I did remember that there is one pice of software I have installed since
PowerPoint was working OK.
I upgraded my Nero to version 7 - which has grabbed a lot of my
multimedia settings and so obviously done some changes to registry
associations.

Removing Office doesn't completely remove Office. There are lots of bits
and pieces left after the uninstall. You would need to get one of the
scrubber programs to get rid of the registry settings and such left. So
Uninstall, scrub, re-install might (and I stress might) have an effect.

Ah! That sounds helpful at least.
I will search around for something to scrub out the last traces of Office
and try again.

Thanks.
