To have gradient on text, you will need to use WordArt.
To do so, click Insert > Picture > WordArt.
Choose a WordArt and type in the words you want.
Click OK.
Then, right click on the WordArt, select Format WordArt.
Click on the color drop down bar under Fill section and select Fill Effects...
Modify the gradient from there.

For normal text, you can only have the gradient filling the textbox.
Right click on the text box, select Format Text Box.
Click on the color drop down bar under Fill section and select Fill Effects...
Modify the gradient from there.

Hi Carl,

gradients are not available as a text color in PowerPoint. For short texts
you could use WordArt objects, which can be filled with gradient colors. Or
did you want to fill the text background with a gradient? Then format the
text box with Format - Fill color - Fill effects as you would do with any
other object.

Best regards,
Ute
