Gradient on Gadget Bar

I find the gradient used on the gadget bar to be annoying.

How can I turn off the gradient and still keep the gadget bar visible

Don't know if that's possible, but once it's up, you can drag and drop
your gadgets to your desktop, and the gadgets will stay open, while
you close the sidebar.
