Hi all,
Since I use redirection in gp would it be better to just
start using roaming profiles?
Sherry

roaming profiles are no walk in the park, I use a combination of them
and redirection, but unless you really need the advantages of them, I
would not use them.

There is some overlap, but if you need to
carry personal settings (ie the NTUSER.DAT
profile), you have to use roaming profiles.
Most users prefer this, provided common software
is installed in the same place on all roaming
machines.

You can, for example, redirect some personal folders
such as My Documents in your profile. So to that
extent it is doing the same thing as gp redirection,
But the profile gives you this ability at a much finer
granularity. For example you can site the user's
Outlook pst files on a network share.

So my preference is to use roaming profiles
and keep the large folders/files out of it by mapping them
in the profile to a network location, or by using
gp to prevent them from roaming at all. I rarely find
any use for gp folder redirection with this scenario.

how do you map them if not using GP ... i have started moving folk over
to roaming profiles and was looking at redirecting the my docs folder
via GP ... what method do you use to map them?

The easiest way to move My Documents
is to change the location in the My Documents
icon's properties. It will offer to move the existing files
which you can do or decline as you please. Either
way the change stays with the user's profile.

The free MS "tweakui" utility offers a GUI interface
to easily change almost every user-profile folder
location.

yes, i use this way if only a few systems but when theres loads of em
ive been using policy ... especially as ive had a few of the manual
moves of the my docs revert back to default .. possible user play there
but they said they hadnt been messing ....!
