Good text about Win2k?

I've just loaded Win2K Professional, with good results. But I would
like to know more about this OS, particularly the use of
Administrative Tools. I'm looking for something beyond blind recipes
for specific problems. Can anyone suggest a good online source of
info, or a textbook - something at the level of the famous "Windows
95 secrets"? thx, vb

I can't. "Good" in this context seems to vary tremendously.

But my advice is to spend some time in your favorite bookstore. Look over
what they have. Then, read the first chapter of the book. If the first
chapter loses you, or fails to inform and delight you, you probably won't
fare any better in the rest of the book. OTOH, if the first chapter does
inform and delight you, you've probably picked a winner.

And, buy the book from that book store. They provided the opportunity to
thumb thru the book. They deserve the sale.

Finally, consider XP.

I'm sure this has been gone over before, but why, exactly? Besides
being usually a little behind the curve, I chose Win2K over XP mainly
because I want configurations to be under my control, not
Mictrosoft's. It was bad enough decoupling IE in Win2K from MSN and
other MS ad/annoyware. - vb

What year is it? Windows 2000 is old enough to have start kindergarten this

XP Pro is what I see in business today. XP / 2003 are the most current and
best supported versions. I do not believe that there is a built in firewall
for 2000, for instance. 2000 Server does not discourage web browsing from a
domain controller.

What do you mean about wanting "configurations to be under my control, not
Microsoft's"? I use both, and prefer XP / 2003 to 2000, but have no trouble
configuring whatever I want, however I want it. IE does not have ads and
annoyware (unless you count its insistence on taking you to Windows Update
under logons that cannot run it, or in SUS environments - now, that annoys
me), and only has one questionable relationship (Alexa's search). Resetting
one's homepage is trivially easy. I'm a big fan of about:blank, simply so IE
loads and lets me enter my URL more quickly.

I'm glad you like XP, & I see it's better in business environments,
but there's no need to sell it to me. Thanks anyway for the links. W2k
