Good Newsreader Software

G

Guy Thomas

Where ever possible I like to stick with Microsoft Products, however, I am
struggling with Outlook Express as a Newsreader.

Either I am missing a basic setting, or I need a different NewsReader.

Problem: My Outlook Express does not update correctly.

Could be the fault of the server. Anomalies are often seen here with
the MS servers.

http://mozilla.org is a source for Thunderbird, a nice FREE mail/news
client.

Hi,

Tools/Options, click on the Read tab and uncheck the line that restricts the
number of newsheaders you get at a single instance.

Thunderbird will be great once it includes a combine and decode function.

Hi Guy,

This article specifically address missing posts using Outlook, Outlook
Express or MS Mail.
http://www.mindspring.com/~anorton1/Post_Mystery.html

This article addresses the same issue for MS Mail users and Microsoft
Communities
http://www.mindspring.com/~anorton1/Post_Mystery_Revisited.html

The first article should help you understand what happened in your case.

I've been using Virtual Access from early Compuserve days. It runs fins
under VISTA and now I'm using the Open Source version VAOS that is
being developed further.

It's wonderful being able to download a couple of thousand messages in
a minute or so and scan/read at leisure.

Since VAOS/VA do not depend on the Registry (unless you want to make
them the default mail reader which I do not) it will even run from a
thumbdrive, although a bit more slowly, and on my dual boot version I
can read and operate the VAOS installed on my VISTA drive when booted
up into XP on another drive <g>

It now deals with text or with HTML messages.

It's still a beta application but it's making progress and is very
useable even in the version I have.

Have you tried Microsoft Windows Mail? It handles email and Usenet. Should
be included with your Vista software.

Nice try ;)

The answers are "Yes", "yes, I know" and "yes, it is" to each of your
questions respectively.

However, like I say I've used XNews for 7 years - and this is simply
because it is excellent and fully-featured, and much better than bundled
Windows apps.

Vista's Windows Mail is basically Outlook Express - a bundled Windows
app - with a facelift, and little else to offer except basic mail and
news functionality - which is fine for most people. However, for my
needs, I find XNews superior in almost every conceivable way.

I also believe that Mozilla Thunderbird is much better than Windows Mail
for mail and news.

Apart from the lack of a combine and decode function.
The spell checker is kule.

Try MesNews - it is VERY configurable and VERY fast!!

KDE

how many messages do you retrieve every time you "get new messages"? the
default is 300 headers. it is possible that there were more than 300 new
post/ replies in that time period. either click the "get new messages" icon
on the menu bar several times, or go into the "read" setting and up your
number to 1000 (maximum) and see if your 3 hrs of missing post appear.

thanks,
didn't know that. :)

If you set that option to 0 (zero) it will download all of the messages.
