good download manager for mozilla?

X

Xavier

Hi, I run Mozilla Firebird under Win2K and wonder if a good download
manager exists for it...
The function I would really need is a "resume after rebootPC"
when I used IE I had Download Express , pretty simple but it had all the
functions I needed.

If you have an idea...
thx for your help,
Xavier

I am using Star Downloader, http://www.stardownloader.com, which takes a
plug-in to Mozilla but works absolutely wonderfully. I believe I found
it on the Pricelessware list, too.

I would suggest downloading Winget:

http://www.winget.cc/download.html

It is light, stable, free and integrates into Mozilla (I suppose it
works with Mozilla Firebird too).

Firebird's own download system has a resume function and is as fast as
my dial-up will allow.

I plan to eventually get around to trying out more downloaders than what I
have going on now. At this time FreshDownload and DLExport are my primaries.

The three things that are important to me:

[1] Does it have you end with broken/incomplete downloads? I haven't had
this problem with the clients I've tried, but it's been reported about
one or two others. I don't want to go anywhere near a downloader that
fails that way.

[2] Is its Save In dialog dynamic? That is, opens at the previously-used
Save directory? Has a nice interface for letting me quickly choose a
different save directory for a download?

[2] Where does it store the history of downloaded files? In my registry?
In an external file? If an external file, does it let me edit it or
export it? Does it, ideal behavior, drop an individual file into the
save directory of a download, so that I have convenient record of the
URL?

[4] The hardest part, and most complex. Any redirect intelligence whatsoever?
Reports are grim... And it is in this area that probably most of us have
the strongest wish....

I've saved lists of the download managers that people recommend here. I'll
eventually get around to installing, and looking for these feature areas that
I wish after. In the meantime, if I were advised if any of the recommended
download managers were good in the above areas, that would be appreciated.

Firebird's own download system has a resume function and is as
fast as my dial-up will allow.

For me, it resumes fine only if the download is paused by me. It will
not resume if the connection is lost.

thank you all for the suggestions,

I've installed 'em all.
About the interface, my favorite is stardownloader (the most ergonomic
IMHO; it can be run in only one compact window, I like that!)... About
the functions I need more time to test.. ;)

thx again

LeechGet handles #1-3 all of the time and #4 most of the time.

In that case, thank you -- I'm going to install immediately,

Regarding the difficult #4, I see on the features list at the web site, it
says: "Web-Parser included." That must pertain to trying to work through
redirects? I'll look forward to any ability at all in this area. Long gone
are the days when things were mostly direct links to program.zip. :(

Doesn't Mozilla have a download manager built-in? What is wrong with it?

It won't handle breaks in downloads :-( If ever something was mis-named
this is it. Great browser though!

Be careful though, Leechget is now crippleware.

If you wind up testing some, the extension at
<http://texturizer.net/firebird/extensions/#externalapp> can add
buttons for them to your toolbar. I use a Star Downloader button with
the argument %clipboard%, so that if I want to use it I can copy the
url to the clipboard and click the button to start DLing.

Excellent!
That way, you don't need the plugin in Firebird directory!
Thanks for the tip, this extension is great! :)
