Hi there,

I've just ordered an Evesham Radeon 9800Pro 128MB 256-bit card for £125.

This is my first ATI card being an NVidia user all my PC life, and I'm
wondering how well this will boost my system.

Heres my current specs:

Athlon 2400+
512MB PC2100 RAM
GeForce3 64MB (bless its cotton socks)
SBLive! 5.1 Sound card
40 Gg Maxtor ATA 133 HD

I'm thinking of upgrading the memory to PC2700.

defenetaly a great deal of graphics boost, new technology, and directX 9,
yeah good move, though i would upgrade memory to PC3200 and 1Gb worth. PC
will allow for overclock if you want to do that with your 2400+ or for
future upgrading..

I got mine about a month ago from Evesham and when I changed the stock
cooler to the Arctic Cooler I found it had an XT core (R360) which after a
quick BIOS flash changed the card to a fully fledged 9800XT only 128mb
though :-(.

I have heard that others have got the R350 core, so I guess its just luck if
you get the R360, but either way it is a great bargin, especially with free
delivery thrown in. Mine arrived in 2 days and I live it what is regarded as
an outlying area.

Rest of my system specs are similar to yours (already PC2700) and I get over
6000 3d2003 Marks after the flash whereas before I was getting 5400ish

But it you wont regret it

Nice one W1dge,

Fingers crossed I get the R360 core then (and then fingers crossed i don't
**** the thing up trying to flash it).

Its the lowest price i've found on the web so what the hell, i was aiming at
a 9600 but at £125 for a 9800Pro and free delivery who can argue with that?

:p

I would not borther flashing it am getting similar results as him
without an unflashed 9800 pro and same system as you. The risk is not
worth it imho.

I only flashed mine as the R360 core (XT) is suppossed to have slightly
better pixel shader hardware, so in games like FarCry you in theory get
slightly better (if you can see it!) graphics.

Also the method I used involved using a boot disk which I found on one of
the overclock forums, that would re-flash your original BIOS if it didnt
work.

I must admit I was a bit nervous, but it all went without a hitch.

At the end of the day it boils down to a simple choice. If you are happy
with the increse the plain 9800 Pro gives you over your existing card leave
it alone. If you want to squeeze eevry last frame out of it, then flash its
BIOS
