I just started my computer this morning and my entire
desktop is empty, (there are no icons and there is no
taskbar or start menu). I used <ctrl> <alt> and <delete>
to run a program and get online to recieve help. Last
night my computer was working fine, and I shut it down
properly (through the start menu). I've been trying to
find the system restore through Task Manager
(ctrl, alt, delete) but I cannot. Please help, email me
anything that may assisst me ([email protected])

This is a new feature in XP only the Recycle Bin shows on
the desktop. To put icons back on the desktop right
click on the program and choose send to desktop.

From searching Google Groups, I found:

-------------------------------------------------------------
Bring up task manager and then do a File ... New Task...
and enter explorer.exe /systray
This should reinitialize the desktop. If it does not
then you have some
serious problem

If this doesn't work, your "serious problem" may be fixable by doing a
Repair Installation:

"How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP"

You may have to do it differently if you have a manufacturer's "restore" CD
rather than a retail XP version. (I hope that if you have a restore CD, that
it is the sort that permits a non-destructive restoration.)

Good luck.
