I have purchased the Windows 2000 to put on my computer.
I realize that an upgrade is not possible because I am
using Windows ME. So - I backed up everything and then
ran setup. I selected the option to do a clean full
install. The setup files go through alright, but when the
system reboots and Win 2000 starts to load - I get a big
blue screen error about BIOS and turning off caching or
shadowing?? I also tried it a third time and got past
that point, but then got an error about "Setup encountered
an error and could not continue. <0x4,0,0,0>. Contact
Tech support and then an option to shutdown or restart. I
restarted and it is now back to the same BIOS
caching/shadowing error. Please help. I need this new OS
for work and I am having a tremendous difficulty in
getting this accomplished. Thanks!

You can't upgrade WinME to Win2K. Win2K does not recognize it as Win2K was released before
WinME was released.

You have to perform a clean installation. If you backed up everything, wipe the hard disk
or delete the partition and start from there.

You would have to go into the BIOS setup and disable the
caching and shadowing, please give exact wording of the
error and the error number if any, also give the make of
bios and version, maybe we can search out the commands
for you.

Sorry I misread your post....

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting Win2K? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are Win2K device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet Win2K's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. Win2K, like WinNT before it, is quite sensitive to
borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard
drives) that will still support Win9x.

Thank you all for posting - I went into advanced setup and
disabled all of the references to caching. I rebooted and
attempted setup. This time I received the following error
message:

"Setup encountered and error and could not continue"
"<0x4,0,0,0>"
"Contact technical support.
Shut down or restart your computer."

You asked for my BIOS information - here goes:

Award Modular
Model 8366-8233
Type x86-based PC
Micro-Star
VT8375-8235 6A6LVM4AC-00

Hope this helps? Will check back tomorrow.
Also, will run the Windows XP compatibility test - and
will post results when completed.

Thank you all again for your help! I truly appreciate all
of your suggestions and your time in trying to help me.

Merry Christmas!
